Spotlight Event: Crafting Complex Characters with the Creators of HBO's HACKS

Join creators and showrunners Jen Statsky and Lucia Aniello to discuss their Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show, Hacks, and how they approach writing compelling characters who often find themselves in moral gray areas. Lucia and Jen will discuss how they approach character development, making secondary characters shine, depicting the climate crisis through comedy, and portraying generational dynamics.

The Sundance Institute Presents Free Short Films at the Salt Lake City Living Traditions Festival

Sundance Institute is screening films by Indigenous filmmakers from around the United States and Canada at the Living Traditions Festival! These films were featured at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

We will be playing Bay of Herons, Ekbeh, Baigal Nuur – Lake Baikal, and Winding Path.

WHEN: Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19
WHERE: Salt Lake City Main Library Theater (210 E 400 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111)
These screenings will be located in the auditorium on the main level of the library.

TIME: 4:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.
Admission is FREE and open to the public.
All films are open captioned. Short Films are not rated.

This program is in collaboration with the Salt Lake City Arts Council.

This Master Class will cover what goes into an effective pitch deck for film and TV, tools you can use to create on your own, and things to consider as you put all of the pieces together. Industry professionals Alexandra Barreto, Taylor Feltner, and DMA Anderson will walk you through the process of creating a professional pitch deck and share lessons they have learned from creating and reviewing pitch decks over the years.

Designing Sound & Score with Nia DaCosta, Laura Karpman, and Katy Wood on The Marvels | Presented by the Dolby Institute

Join Glenn Kiser, Director of the Dolby Institute, for a conversation with director and Sundance alum Nia DaCosta, Academy Award-nominated Composer Laura Karpman, and Supervising Sound Editor Katy Wood as they discuss creating the thrilling soundscape of The Marvels, highlighting specific scenes from the film. In this online event, we will talk about how the collaboration remains the same and how the work evolves as you move from indie film to studio job.

Sundance Film Festival: London 2024

The Festival will showcase a full program of fiction and documentary features that premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in Utah in January, specially curated for London by the Sundance programming team in collaboration with Picturehouse. A special program of  UK shorts will play, as well as a strand of repertory titles to celebrate Sundance Film Festival’s 40th year of the U.S. edition, plus a series of public talks to bring big ideas to life. Passes are on sale now, with early bird pricing in effect until April 26.

Sundance Institute x Chicago 2024

Choose Chicago and the Chicago Film Office, in partnership with the Sundance Institute, will present the first annual Sundance Institute x Chicago 2024 this summer. Taking place June 28–30, Sundance Institute x Chicago 2024 will feature artists programs, film screenings and events across the city.

2024 Sundance Film Festival Asia

Sundance Institute and G2Go Entertainment officially announced the return of the 2024 edition of Sundance Film Festival Asia in Taipei, Taiwan this August 21–25, 2024. Submissions are now open for Sundance Film Festival Asia’s annual Short Film Competition for Taiwanese filmmakers, providing a unique opportunity for emerging local talent to elevate their films on an international platform. Submissions are now open through to May 31, 2024.
